ARTIST'S STATEMENT - Yan Breuleux
Deadline concerns the phenomenon of depersonalization at the heart of the mass communications industry, particularly broadcasting. It is a Director-based animation critiquing the onslaught of text and image as an environmental hazard in an urban environment. My visual research is principally concerned with the broadcast media (posters, videos, commercial signs) and the tools of telecommunication (telephones, telecopiers, tele-presence). In this context, the work of art borrows from the strategies of advertising solicitation and uses, for the purpose of distribution, the means of mass communication. Concretely, the first part, Deadline/Online, will be a multimedia website created with Shockwave, juxtaposing disturbing images and text as a scenario recreating the depersonalization of media in a provocative form. The participant sets in motion the agitation of events, which are not sequential, but organized to present text and image as synonyms, within a multi-branched structure,to create unpredictable combinations. This conception of language follows the form of the growth of vegetation in a naturally recurring binary structure, with unexpected divergences. |
